Top Ways To Prevent Tooth Decay
One of the major dental problems that most kids experience is tooth decay, probably because they are the ones who love sweets the most. But adults are also not very far behind. If you would go to a dentist and ask him which of the common dental problems are often presented to him, he would likely say that tooth decay is one of them. We all have gone through the painful experience of having tooth decay and we certainly do not want that to ever happen again. So the question is, how can we prevent tooth decay? The answer is really very easy.
Dentists, like Dr. Jonathan Hartley, have for so many years been telling us that we should brush our teeth as often as needed. This usually means brushing at least twice a day, but in reality it is often preferred that we brush our teeth after eating. So if you eat three meals in a day, then you need to brush your teeth three times. It is as simple as that, but sadly most of us neglect it. Brushing is very important because it clears away the remnants of the food that we just ate and it also prevents bacteria from building up in our mouth. These of course not only can lead to tooth decay and other teeth and gum disorders.
The truth is that if we do not regularly brush our pearly whites, we should consider ourselves already lucky if it is just tooth decay that we might get. Because there are a myriad of other dental disorders that can result to poor dental hygiene. There is of course gingivitis and gum diseases. And also bad breath, something none of us definitely want to get.
For these reasons, Dr. Jonathan Hartley has listed some of his suggestions on how we should go about with our daily oral and dental hygiene. When we follow these we can avoid getting tooth decay and other common dental problems.
Although it was already mentioned that brushing our teeth is the single most important dental care that we all should be doing, it is often not enough. Flossing is a good addition to our daily dental hygiene as it is effective in getting rid of the scraps of food that lie stuck between the teeth. It is best if we can floss right after eating, but this is not possible often especially if we are eating out. At the very least, just floss before you go to sleep at night.
Fluoride is a great toothpaste ingredient that helps fight off tooth decay. It also strengthens the tooth enamel, making it stronger and more resistant to decay. Always brush your teeth using a fluoride toothpaste.
A mineral that we are all very familiar and also helps make our teeth stronger is calcium. Therefore it is best that we eat foods that are high in calcium such dairy products, fish, and some vegetables especially broccoli.
However if there is something that we should avoid eating too much of it is carbohydrates and sugar. These usually stick onto the tooth enamel, in turn causing it to weaken and become more prone to cavities. That is why we should stay away from eating too much candies and chips.
Lastly, Dr. Jonathan Hartley recommends that we should still visit our dentist regularly. Because this is the best maintenance that we can give to our teeth as our dentist can properly guide us on how to maintain our teeth and mouth in the best healthy condition.
